Below is information about School Meals and Packed Lunches (including Government guidance for parents).
We are more than happy for children to make the change from Packed Lunches to School Meals (or vice-versa). All that we ask is that parents give the School Office/Kitchen 2-weeks notice to make changes to the ordering process.
Thank you for your support.
School Meals
It is very important for all young people to eat a healthy, balanced diet and Kirkburton First School takes this responsibility very seriously. Here are some facts about the meals we offer in school:
- Schools serve a nutritious and tasty two course meal, freshly prepared on site at a set price of £2.12 each day (payable on ParentPay).
- Every menu is developed after consulting with our customers and tailored to each individual school.
- All menus are planned in line with the Government’s School Food Standards - for further info go to: www.schoolfoodplan.com
- We cater for Special diets. If your child has a special dietary requirement or an allergy to any foods please inform the Head Teacher at their school who will liaise with the Catering Supervisor to ensure your child’s needs are met - documentation will be required from your child's doctor in order to ensure we provide the correct requirememnts.
- Kirklees school meals service holds the prestigious Food for Life Silver Catering Mark Award. This means all our menus include a minimum of 75% freshly prepared dishes using local, seasonal and organic produce. We use free range eggs, farm assured meat, sustainable fish and ensure all food used is free from undesirable additives and preservatives.
- At least one day per week we offer a Sugar Smart option in line with the change 4 life programme. This means on the chosen day/days we replace or accompany the desserts with innovative low sugar alternatives.
- We hold themed events, linked to what’s happening in and out of school which make lunchtime educational and fun.
All children in Key stage 1 are currently entitled to free school meals. If you’re on a low income and receive certain benefits you may be eligible to statutory free meals, for more information on this go to: http://www.kirklees.gov.uk/beta/schools/free-school-meals.aspx

Packed Lunches
Of course, we also welcome children to bring their own packed lunch from home.
The information provided below is advice from the Government. As stated, this is advice on best practice but can act as a helpful guide for parents to support our Healthy Schools ethos.
Government packed lunch advice
The UK government produced packed lunch guidance to support the implementation of new school food standards for school lunches and ensure that all children benefit from eating quality food during the school day.
The guidelines are:
- One portion of fruit and one portion of vegetable or salad every day to be included in packed lunches
- Meat, fish or another source of non-dairy protein should be included every day. Non dairy sources of protein include lentils, kidney beans, chickpeas, hummus, peanut butter and falafel
- An oily fish, such as salmon, should be included at least once every three weeks
- A starchy food, such as bread or pasta, rice, couscous, noodles, potatoes or other cereals, should be included every day
- A dairy food, such as semi-skimmed or skimmed milk, cheese, yoghurt, fromage frais or custard should be included every day
- Free, fresh drinking water should be available at all times
- Include only water, still or sparkling, fruit juice, semi-skimmed or skimmed milk, yoghurt or milk drinks and smoothies
- Snacks such as crisps should not be included. Instead, include seeds, vegetables and fruit (with no added salt, sugar or fat). Savoury crackers or breadsticks served with fruit, vegetables or dairy food are also a good choice (nuts should not be included as there are children with allergies in school)
- Confectionery such as chocolate bars, chocolate-coated biscuits and sweets should not be included. Cakes and biscuits are allowed but these should be part of a balanced meal
- Meat products such as sausage rolls, individual pies corned meat and sausages / chipolatas should be included only occasionally
