PE at Kirkburton CE First School

PE is a key part of the National Curriculum, and a great way for us to stay healthy, happy and active.

Every child at Kirkburton First School receives two hours of PE every week.

Children in Class 5 currently attend weekly swimming lessons every Friday morning.

Our youngest children in school, those in Class Reception, benefit from daily physical activity in the outdoor area. Here they have the opportunity to develop their gross and fine motor skills, alongside team building, co-operation and social development.

Please ensure that your child has the required PE kit and appropriate footwear in school at all times. Indoor and Outdoor kit is required as we strive to make the most of our outdoor space at every available opportunity.

If you have any questions about PE at Kirkburton First School, feel free to speak to your child's class teacher, or call in and see Mr Booth.

Sports Funding

Since September 2013 additional funding has been provided by central government for the improvement of standards in physical education and to provide children with more opportunities to participate in physical activities, in particular competitive sports.

The purpose of the funding is for schools to make additional and sustainable improvements to the quality of physical education (PE), physical activity and sport they offer.

This is measured against five key indicators set out by the Department for Education:

  1. The engagement of all pupils in regular physical activity - the Chief Medical Officer guidelines recommend that all children and young people aged 5 to 18 engage in at least 60 minutes of physical activity a day, of which 30 minutes should be in school.
  2. The profile of PE and sport is raised across the school as a tool for whole-school improvement.
  3. Increased confidence, knowledge and skills of all staff in teaching PE and sport.
  4. Broader experience of a range of sports and activities offered to all pupils.
  5. Increased participation in competitive sport.

New Playground Markings

In the first week of January 2018 we were fortunate enough to be able to develop our playground with our fantastic new playground markings. These include a 1KM footprint track, a small activities circuit and a zoned area for activites such as skipping, jumping and hooping.

This has been funded using part of our Sports Premium Funding and the children (and parents) have already given us some great feedback. The children are already making the most of these markings and are enjoying being more active at playtimes and lunchtimes. Some children are even arriving at school a little earlier to try and complete a few laps of our track before school!

Sports Kit & Equipment

In September 2018 we were fortunate to receive a new school football kit, provided by the Premier League. This was following a successfull application through the Premier League Primary Stars and the kit has already been put to great use by some of our KS2 children.

In November 2018 we took delivery of some fantastic new PE equipment. This was purchased using some of our Sports Premium funding. The equipment is already being put to great use during our PE lessons across school, and the children are really enjoying the new lunchtime equipment too, helping them to be active throughout the day.
